Hi everyone

Is anybody able to help please,

I’m ready to get the matches out and torch the thing????

Long story short XT500 1978…… I can’t get a spark out her, I’ve changed ignition coil, ignition stator, points, condenser, spark plug and cap and still nothing ????

I’ve also tried the trick where you wire up the stator black wire to the coil and to the points direct…..

Any other ideas grateful received ????

Thanks….

If you have tried just wiring the source coil , points and ignition coil and you know the points are set right and the coil is ok then it can only be the source coil at fault. You can wire a battery to the ignition coil and wire it earth to earth and place the plug on the earth terminal then touch positive lead of the coil to the live terminal on the battery as see if the plug sparks.

Hi Tommy10,

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I did kinda nervously try your idea and I didn’t get a spark from the anode I got a small spark around the washer…

However I have successfully tested the source coil and wires, ignition coil, cap and lead and am happy that the points and timing are correct but still can’t solve the nil spark issue……..

I’m wondering if the magneto rotor needs re magnetising! Although it still feels strong enough to pull your filling out!!!

Regards

Michael

If you confident all the points are correct then it could be the source coil, the flywheel will be ok as I have never come across a demagnetized flywheel. Try unhooking the kill switch wire near the ignition coil just in case that is shorting inside the switch or changing the condenser.

Other than that check everything again just in case you have missed something, I had a dt1 that wouldn't fire and it came too the points wire was shorting against the back of the engine.
